Day 1: Ho Chi Minh – Cai Be

Escape the bustling streets and lively atmosphere of Ho Chi Minh City as you journey towards the Mekong Delta by road. Upon reaching Cai Lay, assemble the bikes for a short ride to Cai Be. Pedal along backroads for approximately 1.5 hours, relishing the scenic views. Pause for lunch on an island in the middle of the Mekong before continuing to a local homestay. Settle into a typical Vietnamese house with airy rooms and an outdoor kitchen, where gracious hosts welcome guests, providing an authentic taste of Delta life. The rest of the afternoon is free for biking along the dirt paths surrounding the homestay. Dinner will be prepared by the hosts.

Day 2: Cai Be – Tra Vinh

In the morning, travel by road to Vinh Long and embark on a boat journey to one of the Mekong Islands. Bike along narrow country lanes, easy dirt tracks, and trails, experiencing the beauty of the surroundings. This cycling adventure takes you through tiny orchards, colorful riverside scenes, across numerous wooden bridges, and allows for friendly chats with welcoming villagers. Cross a narrow canal on a local sampan and reach the main ferry for a refreshing boat trip across the expansive Co Chien River. The final part of the ride takes you along quiet roads to the charming Khmer town of Tra Vinh. Arriving early in the afternoon, there’s ample time to explore side tracks and trails. Today’s journey provides a great introduction to the ‘Heart of the Mekong.’

Day 3: Tra Vinh – Can Tho

Today offers a unique experience of riding and sightseeing, as much of the area is populated by Khmer people. The regional architecture is intriguing, with many Khmer temples along the route to stop and admire. You can cycle as much or as little as preferred, as the support vehicle follows at all times. The peaceful, narrow, and scenic road leads to Can Tho. Pedal to Ba Om Pond with its magnificent lotus flowers and observe local women having their fortunes predicted in the nearby small temple. Along the way, visit a local Buddhist Temple School and learn about the students’ lives. Arrive late in the afternoon at Can Tho, the largest town in the Mekong, located at the confluence of the Can Tho and Hau Giang Rivers.

Day 4: Can Tho – Ho Chi Minh

After an early breakfast, navigate through the lively morning market’s hustle and bustle and cycle along the banks of an active riverfront. Continue on a narrow paved road to Phong Dien floating market, taking in the sights of endless cottage industries, timber merchants, coconut shredders, and small docks loading and unloading rice. The next stretch of the journey follows a narrow lane to explore the hidden backwaters of the Delta and the towns of O Mon or Binh Thuy. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Can Tho, checking out of the hotel, and heading back to Ho Chi Minh City.
